The CHOMP program is designed to allow teachers and parents the opportunity to correct behaviors that may result in disciplinary action and provides a written record of any repetitive issues that may occur. CHOMP is also a way that we can measure student character and provides a standard by which we measure. What does it mean to CHOMP?
- The C is for Cooperate. Do we cooperate with those around us, such as our teachers, friends, and family? How is our attitude when dealing with others? Are we kind and gentle in spirit to those around us? Remember that Ephesians 4:31-32 says “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (NKJV)
- The H means that we must be Honest, fair, and set a good example. Do we speak truth with our teachers, friends, and family? Proverbs 12:22 (NKJV) tells us that “Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.”
- O is a reminder that we must stay focused, On Task, and always do our best. This is what we call excellence. The Bible has some things to say about that in Colossians 3:22-24. “Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (NKJV) Another way of stating it is to not just do the minimum that will get you by, but to do your absolute best.
- The M is for being Mindful of others and treating them with respect. This is not only just for parents and teachers, but to be respectful for all authority. We should also be respectful to our friends. We should live in humility. The Bible tells us about this in Philippians 2:3-4. “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (NKJV) Another translation of the Bible, The Message, says to “Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”
- Last but certainly not least is the P, which represents being Prepared for what is expected. This works hand in hand with being On Task and doing everything with excellence.
