What We Teach

Our curriculum is adapted from Bob Jones University Press, We use some other programs of study from the Bible Study Guide, the Institute for Creation Research and Answers in Genesis. Each student can only access the courses for which they are actively enrolled in using our online platform. We teach with a Biblical world view. We shape every subject according to the lens of Scripture. Each discipline takes on new meaning when we apply the themes of Creation, Fall, and Redemption. The educational materials we use is not just Biblically faithful, it is also academically sound, using a hands-on-learning approach, creative problem solving, and other research-proven instructional strategies, that motivate our students to take an active role in learning to master age-appropriate material. A complete education goes beyond facts and processes, so the textbooks we use direct our students to think for themselves. Students are encouraged to use discernment, staying away from circular reasoning, to consider the Biblical world view in everyday situations. The materials we use help students to develop skills in critical thinking by asking probing questions. What We Teach

A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations by Kate Turabian is used at SSCA in an effort to bring consistency to papers written for all of our course work. More information can be found at the SSCA Writing Center. Following these standards will promote uniformity and clarity and strengthen the effectiveness of the students writings. The required core curriculum standards are compliant with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. They reflect current research on the developmental stages and needs of children from Early Childhood (EC) through Grade 12. Electives supplement the core subjects for a well-rounded education. Studies such as art, music, and family life skills expand the child's horizons in preparation for the future.

How We Teach Scripture

The way we teach scripture is through exegesis, in a verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book expository way, such as the C3000 series from Pastor Chuck Smith. This way of teaching allows the reader to gain a better understanding of the Bible in a critical reading technique. Exegesis is a “critical explanation or interpretation of a text or portion of a text, especially of the Bible.” It is analyzing the text in such a way that one draws out the information, morals, and messaging from the Bible. A key element is understanding what the verse, chapter, and book of the Bible meant in its original context.

Exegesis provides a way to approach the Bible that reduces the risk of misinterpretation. It requires the person engaging with the Biblical text to do a little research. Rather than guessing what a passage or verse means, it is knowing how to use the tools to find out If there appears to be a contradiction between something in the Old Testament and the New Testament, it is useful to see both in their cultural context, as well as how translating the Hebrew passages versus the Greek passages into one language may have influenced the way the passage appears. For example, some of what Jesus critiques as the law in the Gospels, is not the law as seen in the Mosaic texts, but rather centuries of added tradition. Without knowing the Pharisaical created traditions that got incorporated into the law, these critiques may seem contradictory with the Old Testament.

It can also make an individual re-think the instinctive reaction to something that seems foreign, strange, or uncomfortable for the modern reader of the Bible. Rather than reading one’s own feelings into the passage, stopping at a confusing section and taking the time to understand what the passage is actually saying in context can clarify practices that may otherwise have no meaning in today’s culture. Academically, it is helping individuals from one culture understand another. Spiritually it helps the believer understand God’s Word, as spoken by God.
